EU Advocacy Meeting: Improving existing data collection practices on Violence Against Children in detention facilities across the EU

Context

Despite global commitments to eradicate Violence Against Children (VAC), including initiatives aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and EU Strategy on the Rights of the Child, instances of VAC persist across various settings. Particularly concerning is the situation for children deprived of liberty, who are inherently vulnerable and often subjected to violence, whether from peers or adults. Addressing this issue requires urgent action from states to improve data collection and analysis in the children detention facilities, as current efforts in this regard are insufficient.

This two-day international gathering is set to take place in Madrid within the scope of the EU-funded Data MOSAIC project, which aims to answer the above-mentioned need through improving existing data collection practices on VAC in children detention facilities across the EU. The purpose of the event will be to actively engage European child justice and children's rights leaders, as well as policy makers, in shaping a strategy for trans-national advocacy focused on enhancing data collection regarding Violence Against Children (VAC) in detention.

During the event, discussions will be centred around the data collection tool and guidance to be piloted in three detention facilities across 3 EU countries within the scope of Data MOSAIC, with valuable input from the International Advisory Committee and Children’s Advisory Group representatives.

The Advocacy event will include  working sessions with children and young people (as part of our commitment to ensure meaningful child participation in our work). These sessions will provide valuable insights and input for the  Data MOSAIC project, and the upcoming World Congress on Justice With Children. They will be facilitated and supported by members of the International Advisory Committee. The sessions are designed to be interactive and tailored to the specific needs and objectives of our project.
