About the Event

Serving as a key preparatory milestone in anticipation of the 2025 World Congress on Justice With Children, and informing the Committee on the Rights of the Child’s development of the upcoming General Comment No. 27 on children’s rights to access to justice and effective remedies, this Side Event brings together governments, multilateral organisations, civil society organisations, and children and young people themselves to offer innovations which support the achievement of child-centred access to justice.

This Side Event is a multilateral call for strong partnerships and international, national and local action to achieve SDG16 for children. The event will give special attention to those children in vulnerable situations, facing the greatest adversity, and will reflect our Agenda 2030 ambitions to ‘leave no one behind’ and reach ‘the furthest behind, first’.

Agenda

This hybrid event takes place in New York, USA between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm (EDT) on Wednesday 10 July 2024, with registration and coffee available from 09:30. Those attending in-person are encouraged to attend the full event. The High-Level session (only) will have hybrid access.

The event will be hosted in three parts, building from one session to the next:

  • High-Level session on SDG 16.2 and 16.3, focused on national actions to achieve Agenda 2030 (10:00 – 11:00 am EDT, hybrid session)
  • Experiential Learning Simulation and Debrief session (11:00 am – 1:00 pm EDT, in-person session, light lunch provided)
  • Consultation on Local Game-changing Innovations that Deliver Access to Justice (1:00 - 3:00 pm EDT, in-person session)

You’ll hear from governments, outlining their efforts to measure and understand the justice gap and their gamechangers to help close it; young people, presenting their experiences working in intergenerational justice partnerships; and multilateral organisations, profiling their work on policy and practice innovations that promote child-friendly justice, and the evidence and data required to drive this change.

Objectives

Access to justice for children is increasingly recognised as an essential building block for a sustainable future. This Side Event will profile strategies that are delivering innovative policies and practices, and closing the vast justice gap that children face, to create an equitable future for all. It aims to:

  • Leverage knowledge of practice and systems innovations across regions and contexts, to accelerate progress to achieve justice for children .
  • Shine a spotlight on national government leadership action on children’s justice issues, to promote a strategic, collaborative approach across governments and civil society.
  • Inform the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child’s emergent General Comment No. 27, by contributing access to justice game-changers.
